The U.S. Department of State convenes its largest-ever group of Professional Fellows in Washington, D.C., November 15-17, with more than 275 emerging global leaders from 44 countries. The participants are in Washington following intensive month-long fellowship placements with state and local government offices, non-government organizations, media outlets, and businesses in 31 states across the country.
Fellowships provide participants the opportunity to examine the relationship between civil society and government in the United States and how local governments and organizations work to strengthen citizen participation, transparency, and accountability. The program underpins the State Department’s efforts to build the leadership capabilities of emerging international leaders, while strengthening global ties and professional networks between Americans and young leaders from around the globe.
During the capstone events in Washington, the State Department will recognize four distinguished alumni <https://alumni.state.gov/highlight/fall-2016-alumni-impact-award-winners-selected-professional-fellows-congress> of the Professional Fellows program, from Honduras, Oman, Paraguay, and the United States, whose activities have had a significant impact on their communities.
Host organizations for the Professional Fellows include the National Federation of the Blind, the Congressional Hunger Center, Human Rights Campaign (HRC), International Center for Research on Women, the Huffington Post, and Starbucks Coffee Company. Early next year, many of the Americans who hosted Professional Fellows will travel overseas for follow-up programs in the communities and workplaces of the Fellows.
