"FLEX Forest"

On April 11, 2010, more than 50 FLEX alumni and their friends gathered at Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan, Armenia to celebrate Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) a bit early with a volunteer community service project.FLEX alumniLusine Karlovich '06 and Sona Rushanyan '08 received a GYSD grant to fund the project entitled "FLEX FOREST."

In cooperation with "Hayantar" ("Armenian Forest") NGO and "The Armenian Genocide Museum Institute" (known as Tsitsernakaberd), FLEX alumni and youth were able to reforest a portion of the public memorial park with 120 donated ash trees. "FLEX Forest" planners have assured the sustainability of this reforestation project through their cooperation with themuseum, since the park has access to water and can provide irrigation and alumni will make regular visits to ensure the success of the planting.

During the "FLEX Forest" event, alumni and youth also joined forces to leave the area cleaner than when they arrived by doing a trash pick-up.

Veterans' Home Visit

On April 11' 2010, FLEX alumni visited the World War II Veterans Home in Yerevan to spend some time with the elderly residents and learn about their situations and problems. In addition to conversation, FLEX alumni shared some snacks and presents with appreciative residents. FLEX alumni were very welcomed guests and had a wonderful time spending time with their elders. For the residents, the FLEX visit was a chance to tell about their lives and experiences and enjoy the refreshing company of young people.
